Similan Islands: excursion to the best beaches in Thailand. Similan Islands: what are interesting and how to visit? Where are the Similan Islands on the map

One of the most beautiful places in Thailand is the Similan Islands. They should be visited by everyone who comes to Thailand. The Similan Islands are part of the national reserve and the safety of the environment is carefully monitored here. Therefore, nature on the islands has retained its original beauty: snow-white beaches, azure sea and stunning natural views. The water in the sea is so clear that the bottom is perfectly visible.

The Similan Islands are located in the Andaman Sea and the nearest major resort from them is Phuket. For a long time, the Similan archipelago consisted of 9 islands, but in 1998 2 more islands were included in its composition, so today there are 11 Similan Islands. They stretched in a vertical line from north to south parallel to the mainland coast of Thailand. The total area of the islands is approximately 140 km. sq. Each island in the archipelago is unique. It is pleasant to relax on some islands and they are a real beach paradise, others are just rocks overgrown with greenery.

Each island in the Similan archipelago has its own name and serial number: Huyong - No. 1, Payang - No. 2, Payan - No. 3, Miang - No. 4, Ha - No. 5, Payu - No. 6, Hin Pusar - No. 7, Similan - No. 8, Bangu - No. 9, Bon and Tachai (do not have numbers). You can see their location on the map.

However, not all islands can be visited. Some of them are not accessible to tourists. This is done in order to preserve the pristine nature of the islands and the endangered species of turtles. Also, the islands are periodically closed for several years so that they can recover after visiting tourists. Such was the case with the island of Tachai, it was closed for several years, and then it again accepts tourists.

The following islands are currently open to the public:

Koh Similan (Similan). The largest island, it is here that most tourists come. It is ideal for beach holidays, jungle walks, diving and snorkeling. Here is the famous Parus rock, from which you can admire a breathtaking view of the surroundings of the island. Similan has 2 wonderful beaches - Donald Duck Beach and Beacon Beach. Also on this island there are tents for living.

Ko Miang (Miang). It ranks second in size among the Similan Islands. There are several tents and comfortable bungalows here. This island has the best infrastructure. The island is ideal for swimming in the sea and sunbathing, has a lot of diving points, and there is also a delightful coral reef, which is appreciated by snorkelers. There are two wonderful beaches on Miang Island - Hat Lek and Hat Yai.

Ko Tachai (Tachai). This island has been closed for several years in a row. But since 2010 it has been opened and now there is an opportunity to enjoy its beauty. There is no usual infrastructure on Tachai Island. Its area is 2.5 sq. km, the island can be walked around in a couple of hours. Tachai has white sand beaches, clear and transparent sea, coral reefs. It is ideal for beach holidays, snorkeling and diving.

There are also islands on the Similans that are not accessible to the public, but you can swim up to them and go diving near them.

Ko Huyong (Huyong). This island has the longest beach in the Similan where turtles lay their eggs. But this beach is closed for tourists. But divers love this island. Near the underwater rock there are many turtles, stingrays and other inhabitants of the sea kingdom.

Koh Bangu (Bangu). This island is also called the island of the skull, as it looks like it from afar. There are many diving points around the island. Here you can see the leopard shark, turtle, barracuda, stingrays and more. Bangu Island is very popular among divers.

Hin Pusar (Hin Pusar). This island is a rock, part of which is under water. The unusual shape of the island attracts many tourists who are happy to take pictures of it with a camera. Also, Hin Pusar Island is a favorite place for experienced divers. There are many caves and labyrinths, as well as a rich underwater world.

Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are a group of small islands located in the northern part of the Andaman Sea, opposite the coast of Khao Lak.

The distance from Khao Lak to the Similan Islands is approximately 60 km, the distance between the Similans and Phuket Island is just over 100 km. (in a straight line), the size of the archipelago is approximately 20 km. (from North to South).

The archipelago consists of 9 islands stretched in a line parallel to the coastline of the mainland. The names of the islands, from the southernmost to the northernmost, are: Ko Huyong, Ko Payang, Ko Payan, Ko Miang, Ko Ha, Ko Hok, Ko Payu, Ko Similan and Ko Bangu.

The size of the largest, and at the same time, the most visited island of the archipelago, the island of Ko Similan (Ko Similan), sometimes called the island number 8, is 4.3 x 1.4 km. The size of the second largest and most popular island, the island of Koh Miang (Ko Miang, island number 4) is 2.2 km. x 650 m. The use of numbers after (or instead of) the name of the islands may come as a surprise, but this is a generally accepted tradition for this archipelago.

The Similan Islands are one of the most beautiful places in southern Thailand. Monumental granite rocks, snow-white coral beaches, dense tropical forest and clear blue water - all this leaves an unforgettable and incomparable impression. The underwater world of the archipelago is no less impressive and the diving and snorkeling in the Similan Islands is by all accounts one of the best, if not the best, in all of Thailand.

In English, the name of the Similan Islands is usually written as Similan Islands or as Mu Ko Similan. The same name (Mu Ko Similan) has the national park of the same name, on the territory of which the Similan Islands are located. In Russian, the abbreviated name of these islands (Similans) is also quite often used.

Trips, excursions and tours to the Similan Islands. Maps of Similan and the nearby coast.

Below are two maps: a map of the northern part of the Andaman coast, showing the location of the islands, and a detailed map of the Similan Islands themselves.

Getting to the Similan Islands is quite simple, just buy an excursion at one of the travel agencies or. The cost of a day trip, which usually includes visiting at least two islands, lazing on the beach, snorkeling in several places, and, if desired, hiking in the rainforest, starts from 2,000 baht per adult. Prices for dive tours usually start from 4500 baht per person.

In addition to a one-day trip to the Similan Islands, it is also possible to travel for several days with an overnight stay, such multi-day tours are sold in all travel agencies in Phuket and Khao Lak. You can spend the night on the Similans on two islands, the island of Koh Miang (No. 4) and the island of Koh Similan (No. 8), in tents or bungalows owned by the administration of the national park. The cost of spending the night in a tent is about 600 baht, in a bungalow - about 2000 baht. The administration of the national park does not welcome the tents brought with them.

Divers have another, quite interesting, opportunity to organize a multi-day trip to the Similan Islands. Namely, buy a multi-day liveaboard dive safari, commonly referred to as a "liveaboard". The characteristic cost of such a tour is 5000 baht per person for each day of the trip.

If your budget allows, another option for a multi-day trip to the Similans is possible, namely, renting a boat or yacht (along with the captain).

This type of service is widespread in Thailand, especially in Phuket. The cost of a day of rent starts from 20,000 baht and depends on the size and quality of the vessel, as well as your ability to bargain.

It is not superfluous to add that the above amount looks stunning only at first glance. Yachts and boats are designed to accommodate several people, and if the cost of rent is divided by the whole company, the cost of organizing such a trip will no longer look so impressive.

When planning a trip to the Similans, you need to remember that the islands are only available from November to April. During the rest of the year, the Mu Ko Similan National Park is closed to restore the flora and fauna that have been trampled and scared away by numerous tourists.

P.S. Mu Ko Similan National Park opening and closing dates vary from season to season. In 2016, the national park will be closed from 16 May to 31 October. You can check these dates on the official website of the national parks of Thailand.

The beaches of the Similan Islands

Although there are 9 islands, you can lie on the white sand only on islands No. 4 and No. 8. The remaining islands are either picturesque, but inhospitable rocks, or access to these islands is closed in order to protect wildlife (as is done on island No. 1).

The most famous beach of the archipelago is located on the island of Koh Similan (island number 8). This is Donald Duck Beach, the same one where Sail Rock is located, the most recognizable place in the Similan Islands. In addition to it, there is another high-quality beach on island number 8, Beacon Beach, located on the opposite side of the island. Koh Miang (Island #4) also has two spectacular beaches, Hat Yai* (Honeymoon Beach) and Hat Lek* (Princess Beach).

Another beach worth mentioning, the longest beach of the Similan Islands, is located on the island of Ko Huyong (island number 1). However, this beach is home to giant sea turtle nesting sites and is currently closed for conservation reasons.

* Note. The word "Hat", translated from Thai, means "beach"; quite often this word is written as "Had".

Read more about excursions to the Similan Islands. Tour prices.

The organization of excursions to the Similan Islands, as well as the organization of excursions to and from, is almost completely monopolized by one tour operator, Medsye.

On the website of this company, as well as in its posters and booklets, the prices for excursions to the Similan Islands are as follows: 3,500 baht when traveling from Khao Lak and 3,800 baht when traveling from Phuket*.

These prices should not mislead you. In fact, all these excursions are sold at a very large discount, and their normal price is just over 2000 baht per person*. Moreover, if you are traveling to the Similan Islands with a large group, you can (and should) beat sellers for additional discounts from the price of 2000+ baht.

It is worth noting one interesting nuance in the work of this tour operator. Almost all Medsye guides are our compatriots (more correctly, compatriots). So, even if you do not know English very well, you will not have the slightest problem with the perception of what is happening.

It makes sense to go to the Medsye website and download their booklets. There is a lot of useful information, both about the excursion program to the Similan Islands, and about their other offers (multi-day trips to the Similan Islands, trips to Tachai Island and the Surin Islands, etc.).

* All prices are for the 2019 season. These prices have not changed much in the last few years.

Weather in the Similan Islands. When is the best time to visit Similan?

There is a little-known, but at the same time indisputable fact: the weather in the Similan Islands is noticeably better than the weather in the nearby areas of Thailand (in Phuket and Khao Lak).

The reason for the sunnier weather compared to the mainland is simple and obvious: ascending air currents that exist over heated land masses lead to the formation of clouds. The same clouds and haze that usually cover the sky, both over Phuket and over Khao Lak.

Over the Similans, with their small islands, there is no such haze; the islands of the archipelago are too small for clouds to form over them.

So, when you see bright and saturated photos of the Similan Islands, these are not Photoshop miracles, it’s just that the sun over the Similans really shines brighter and more dazzling than in other areas of Thailand. By the way, the above is true not only in relation to the Similans. Located in a similar geographical position and will also be able to please you with bright and sunny weather.

If we talk about high and low seasons, then the best time to visit the Similan Islands is the period from early December to the end of March, the time when in southern Thailand it rains least and the sun shines most often.

The underwater world of the Similan Islands. Snorkeling and diving in the Similans.

Any standard tour to the Similan Islands includes two or three snorkel stops. Everything you need for diving (mask, snorkel, etc.) can be rented from the organizers of the trip.

If scuba diving interests you on a more serious level, organizing diving in the Similans will not be the slightest difficulty.

There are a great many dive centers, both in Phuket and Khao Lak, and there is even a suspicion that there are more of them than the divers themselves;)

And even if you settle somewhere out of the way, you can be 100% sure that your hotel or guesthouse will have a dive company that will gladly organize a dive for you at any popular point in the Andaman Sea.

All that is required of you is the presence of a PADI certificate, and, of course, money, because. Diving is not a cheap hobby. It can be specially noted that there are also a great many Russian-speaking dive centers in Thailand, if you feel that your English is not good enough for free communication, you will always have the opportunity to buy a dive tour from your compatriots.

Prices for dive tours to the Similan Islands fluctuate quite widely and start at 4,500 baht for a day trip with two (usually) dives. Multi-day trips with accommodation on board the ship (liveaboard) are also possible. The characteristic price of such tours is 5000 baht for each day of the trip.

It is worth noting that it makes sense to go diving in the Similan Islands, after all, not for one day, but at least three, and for several reasons. Firstly, the number of worth visiting dive points in the Similan Islands region is noticeably more than a dozen, and all of them are quite different from each other. Secondly, during such a multi-day trip, you will have the opportunity to see the Similans in the early morning and at sunset, when these fabulous islands do not have countless crowds of sightseers, and this is a spectacle of a fundamentally different quality than the Similans at the height of the day, occupied by hordes of tourists.

The inhabitants of the underwater world of the Similan Islands

Giant stingray (Giant manta ray) Leopard shark (Leopard shark) Murena (Moray eel)
Murena (Moray eel) Giant sea turtle Unicorn fish
Lionfish (Lionfish) Mollusk Chromodoris geminus Clownfish (Tomato clownfish)

Giant tortoises of the Similan Islands

Giant sea turtles, reaching one meter in size, are one of the most colorful creatures that live in southern Thailand and, in particular, on the Similan Islands.

It is generally accepted that turtles are phlegmatic and unhurried, however, this is not entirely true. Being marine inhabitants, turtles swim well and fairly quickly, and they do it very gracefully, refuting the conventional wisdom about their own clumsiness.

The phlegm of turtles also belongs more to the realm of prejudice. In fact, they are simply confident in the strength of their armor and can afford to be calm even in the presence of such an overall predator as homo sapiens. At the same time, turtles are curious, moderately playful and not devoid of addictions. In particular, they are partial to bananas, and if you take a few with you, you will have a great opportunity to feed a 50-kilogram turtle right from your hands.

It should be noted that 50 kg. - not at all the limit for a turtle, this is a characteristic weight for an adult individual 60 - 80 cm long. Larger specimens, with a length of about 1 m and weighing more than 100 kg, are also not particularly rare.

One might wonder, what are the chances of seeing a large sea turtle in the Similan Islands? It is clear that not 100%, but this probability is quite high, including due to the fact that one of the Similan Islands, island # 1 (Ko Huyong) is completely given over to nesting turtles. And, finally, it can be noted that the Similans, along with Koh Tao Island, located in the Gulf of Thailand, are one of the two places in Thailand where a meeting with large turtles is really possible for a mass tourist.

Life above the surface of the water

The Similans are known for more than just their underwater world. The islands are inhabited by 16 species of bats, and flying foxes are also found in abundance. The latter on the islands are no less than in the Maldives, which are rightly considered the world leader in the number of these funny and unlike creatures.

Among other winged inhabitants of the islands, it is worth noting several species of birds that live on the Similans and are not typical for the mainland of Thailand. First of all, this is the Nicobar pigeon (Nicobar Pigeon) and the two-colored fruit dove (Pied Imperial Pigeon), birds are beautiful, not shy, and rarely seen anywhere. In total, according to the latest data, there are 39 species of birds on the Similan Islands.

Brief description of the individual islands of the Similan Archipelago

Below are brief descriptions of the main islands of the Similan archipelago, including the islands of Koh Miang and Koh Similan, visited by almost all excursions coming to the Similan Islands.

Ko Huyong Island

Ko Huyong Island, the southernmost of the islands in the Similan archipelago, has serial number #1. The size of Ko Huyong Island is 1.5 km. long and 650 m wide. On the island of Ko Huyong is the longest, more than a kilometer long beach in the archipelago, but access to it is currently closed for environmental reasons.

It should be noted that only the island itself is closed to the public, its immediate surroundings, where several remarkable dive points are located, are accessible and actively visited by divers. Among these dive points are the underwater rock Surgeon Rock, known as the habitat of giant stingrays, and Coral garden, a dive point whose name speaks for itself.

Koh Miang Island

Koh Miang Island, number #4, is the second largest island in the Similan archipelago. The size of Koh Miang is 2.2 km. long and 650 meters wide. Among the attractions of Koh Miang are two magnificent beaches, Hat Yai Beach (Honeymoon Beach) and Hat Lek Beach (Princess Beach), a viewpoint located at an altitude of 130 meters, as well as a jungle hiking trail.

Along with Koh Similan, Koh Miang is one of two islands where you can spend the night and where there are cottages, a tent city, food outlets and other facilities of the national park.

Hin Pousar Island

Hin Pousar Island (alternative name - Elephant Head Rock) is a rock located between the islands of Ko Payu and Ko Similan. Above the surface of the water, only a small part of the rock is visible, most of it, at the same time, is under water. The above-water part of the rock has a very unusual and memorable shape, and what is interesting, despite its name, does not resemble the head of an elephant.

Considered one of the best dive spots in the Similan Islands, Elephant Head Rock is known to be the most likely place to encounter large tropical water creatures, including giant manta ray.

Koh Similan Island

Ko Similan, the largest island in the archipelago, which gave its name to the entire group of islands, has serial number #8. The size of the island of Koh Similan is 4.3 km. long and 1.4 km wide. Like Koh Miang, Koh Similan is one of the most visited islands in the archipelago, and one of only two islands with national park campsites. Koh Similan has two quality beaches, Donald Duck Beach and Beacon Beach, impressive cliffs (most notably Sail Rock, the hallmark of the Similan Islands), a viewpoint, and a jungle hiking trail. It can be noted that the island of Koh Similan is not only the largest, but also the highest island of the archipelago; the maximum height of its rocks is 244 meters.

Koh Bangu Island

The island of Ko Bangu, the northernmost of the islands of the Similan archipelago, has serial number #9. The size of Ko Bangu is 1.2 km. x 700 m. The landscape of this island is characterized by chaotic heaps of large boulders, which can also be observed under water, in the immediate vicinity of the island.

This island is visited exclusively by divers, and there are several notable dive spots in its vicinity. First of all, this is Christmas Point, a group of underwater rocks located near the northeastern tip of the island of Ko Bangu, and is known as one of the best dive sites in the Similan Islands.

When we talk about the resorts of Thailand, first of all, our head is visited by associations with noisy Asian and, moreover, crowded cities. But this does not mean that there are no quiet and secluded exotic corners on the territory of the country. The list of such paradise territories is headed by the Similan archipelago, which consists of nine small islands.

In Thailand, they are washed by the waters of the Andaman Sea and are located a short distance from the main resort of Phuket, which in a short time has been chosen by millions of tourists around the world. It is worth noting that the archipelago occupies the tenth position in the list of the most beautiful places marked by UNESCO.

The islands are included in the national park of Thailand and are under regular control of the authorities. The preservation of the environment on the territory of the Similan Islands is carefully monitored: construction is prohibited here. Thus, the absence of any structures, including even shops and retail stalls, can be explained.

If you came to Thailand in search of exotic places, pristine beaches and unique nature, then you definitely need to visit the Similan Islands. white sand and a sense of freedom will not leave you throughout the rest.

Let's take a closer look at the main attractions and wonders of nature that can be found on the territory of the Similan Islands.

Islands in Thailand

A large number of tourists annually arrive on the territory of the Similan archipelago for a fairly short period of time, since the location of the islands allows you to travel in both directions, lie on the sandy beach, enjoy the beautiful nature and return back to the hotel. Although many vacationers wish to spend a longer weekend on the Similan Islands in Thailand, small tent cities and cozy forest bungalows are provided for such visitors. The entrance to the territory of the archipelago is closed to visitors during the rainy season - from May to September.

Koh Similan

As we have already said, the archipelago consists of nine islands, but only a few are open for free visiting.

The island of Koh Similan is the largest among all the others and is marked at number eight in the archipelago. This area is famous for its crystal clear waters, underwater landscapes and tropical vegetation. First of all, novice divers and snorkelers go here. A granite rock is especially popular with tourists, from the top of which a stunning view of the entire district opens. See photos of the Similan Islands below.

Koh Miang

Koh Miang has gained great popularity among fans of a passive beach holiday. Firstly, because Haad Lek is located in the eastern part of the island - one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Thailand. The second reason is the specialized territory for the tent camp and bungalows, which is in the north of the island. You can also get from the town to Haad Lek along a special path dedicated for this, which passes through the picturesque jungle. Walking from one place to another will not take you long, and not far from this amazing beach you will find a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkeling.

Ko Hu Yong

This island is number one in the archipelago. Unfortunately, it is not intended for overnight stays, but here you can have fun during the day. It is here that tourists come to wander along the long sandy beaches and watch the turtles.

Cu Ba Ngu

It has a second, more common name among visitors - Skull Island. When you swim closer to it, it really resembles a large skull from the side. The cleanest sea water and coral reefs are here, so the surroundings of Cu Ba Ngu are chosen by both beginners and professional divers.

Climate

The tropical monsoon climate zone covers the entire southern part of Thailand. Summer and good weather reign here throughout the year. The exception is the rainy season, but the air temperature does not drop much. During the tourist season, the thermometer reaches 35 degrees.

The mild warm climate of the Similan Islands is perfect for a resort beach holiday. Rich tropical vegetation and magnificent azure sea await travelers from different countries.

As we have already said, the rainy season falls during the summer months. When all the countries of Europe are languishing in the heat, in Thailand there are torrential rains. Therefore, the organization of your trip to this wonderful country should be approached responsibly.

How to get there?

You can get to the Similan Islands on your own using one of the flights from Russia to Phuket. Upon arrival at the local airport, a new question will arise in front of you: taxi or public transport? Of course, the first option will cost several times more, but it will help save a lot of time. If you have nowhere to hurry, then you can wait for the bus following the route to the Bus Terminal 1 bus station in Phuket Town.

Further, all tourists transfer to another transport, to Khao Laki, where the Tap Lamu pier is located. This is the most budgetary way to get to the territory of the Similan archipelago. Although some visitors book direct tours from Phuket, this is already a matter of taste and financial security.

From Thap Lamu Pier only speed boats go, since the distance between the islands and it is about 60 km. This information may not seem so important at first glance, but often some travelers simply forget to take comfortable seats on the boat, and then they have to huddle all the way among the standing crowd of tourists.

Underwater world

The Similan Islands are very popular among lovers of the underwater world. This is a true paradise for professional divers and just those who like to snorkel and fins in search of marine life.

In most cases, all trips to the Similan Islands for divers fall into two categories:

  • Individual trips with an instructor. A tourist can create his own individual route, after agreeing it with the instructor.
  • Diving cruises. You are going with a team along the popular "beaten paths" for several days. On the ship you are provided with a bed, full briefing and training.

The most favorable place for organizing such trips is Phuket. Here you will be provided with a wide range of different professional level operators, it is also possible to get a discount. It is worth noting the fact that multi-day cruises or diving among the caves are available only for experienced divers, confirmation is the presence of an appropriate certificate.

Visa to Thailand

We are all used to the strict visa policy of many European countries. Often the usual planning of a vacation turns into a terrible nightmare due to all this paperwork in the visa centers. After that, we all still have to stay in a tense state for some time, waiting for the consul's response to our application. Fortunately, our affairs with Thailand are a little different.

Any citizen of the Russian Federation should just smile at passport control upon arrival in the country, as he instantly receives the desired stamp in his passport. It is from this moment that the most interesting adventures in his life begin!

If you want to stay in the country for a longer period (over 60 days), then you need to apply for a visa at the Thai Embassy in Moscow. Visas are divided into single and double entry. In the second case, it is necessary to leave the territory of the state after three months of stay. Alternatively, you can leave Thailand for the neighboring country of Laos for one day, and then return back again before the expiration of the issued visa.

How much will vacation cost?

The money issue often worries novice travelers who have never been to Thailand before. How much does a trip to the Similan Islands cost? To be honest, by asking such a question, you are already exposing yourself to waste of money. No tour to the archipelago needs to be booked in advance from Russia. There are many local travel companies in Thailand that are ready to offer excellent organization for quite little money.

One day on the islands with a return to Phuket will cost about 4,000 baht, which is about 7,000 rubles. Two days with one overnight stay in the archipelago will cost about 6,000 baht, about 10,500 rubles.

All the necessary information on how to get to the Similian Islands on your own has been described in the previous paragraphs. Our dear readers can only follow the instructions already prepared in advance.

You can book an excursion to the Similan Islands from Phuket, Krabi or Khao Laki at any time for a period of one to three days. Khao Laki is considered to be the closest in distance from the archipelago, but from Ao Nang you will have to go about three hours one way.

What is included in the price of the tour?

Almost all tour operators offer tourists on the streets of Thailand the following list of services included in the cost of the tour:

  1. Transfer from the hotel by bus to the pier, from where boats depart to the Similan Islands.
  2. Accompanying a guide.
  3. Tour of the islands "Koh Miang" and "Koh Similan" and a stop in the sea for snorkeling, with the issuance of the necessary equipment.
  4. Three meals a day.
  5. Insurance.
  6. Accommodation in a tent.

How much does it cost to self-rent accommodation in the archipelago?

This question is asked by many tourists who plan to save money on the services of travel companies, and rightly so, since independent travel is often more exciting and unpredictable. Someone finds romantic notes in this, while someone does not like noisy tourist groups at all, breathing intently in the back.

So, as we have already mentioned, the closest way to get to the Similian Islands is from Khao Laki Pier. Directly on the spot, if you plan to stay overnight, you need to rent a tent or bungalow. The following rates apply on the territory of the archipelago:

  • Rent a tent - 900 rubles per day.
  • Bungalow with fan - 1700 rubles per day.
  • Bungalow with air conditioning - 3500 rubles per day.

When booking independently on the website of the national park from Monday to Thursday, a 30% discount.

Conclusion

The Similian Islands are a paradise on earth, suitable not only for sightseeing trips, but also for independent travel. They are recognized as one of the most beautiful and mysterious places throughout Thailand. Picturesque nature, rich underwater world, romantic sunsets and snow-white beaches will sink deep into the soul and will beckon here again and again. Both adults and children will like it here.

A holiday in the archipelago can also be suitable for a honeymoon trip for many reasons. These are wonderful portrait shots against an exotic background, romantic bungalows immersed in the jungle, and no paperwork with visa processing. And most importantly - affordable prices for any type of holiday. Russian tourists have chosen this place for a long time and are trying to give their preference to this country, and Turkey and Egypt, which are already familiar to everyone, are gradually fading into the background. In addition, the numerous positive reviews about the Similan Islands are at least a reason to visit. Have a nice rest and new discoveries!

These are, first of all, snow-white beaches and turquoise, incredibly clear water. During the tourist season, there are daily excursions to the Similans with tourists eager to see the tropical Paradise islands from advertising booklets, swim in clear water, admire tropical fish, stroll along the white sandy beaches.

From this article you will learn:

What are the Similans and why do they go to these islands

The Similan Islands is a group of 9 islands, a national park in Thailand, which is open to tourists during the dry season from October to May. At other times of the year, the islands are almost uninhabited (except for a couple of reserve rangers).

The Similans have no airport, no hotels, no ground transportation, and not even a pier. Therefore, it makes no sense to search on sites for booking hotels in the similan islands or ferries to the Similans, as they simply do not exist. The only way to get to the islands is by tourist boats. Only two islands (No. 4 and No. 8) are allowed to step on the foot of a tourist. Near the remaining islands, you can only swim, dive or scuba dive.

Each island has its own name, for example, No. 8 is Similan Island, No. 6 is Nok, No. 4 is Miang. But usually they are called by numbers.

Similans are granite islands of volcanic origin (which makes them look like the Seychelles). The islands are covered with lush vegetation and white sand in the bays. Of the living creatures on the Similans, land crabs of impressive size and fruit bats live. Bats are also called flying foxes or flying dogs and they are 100% vegetarian. The islands are home to a large number of hermit crabs.

But all of the above are just dry facts. The main thing that attracts thousands and hundreds of thousands of tourists to the Similans is incredibly beautiful turquoise sea and white sandy beaches.

How to get to the Similan Islands

You can get to Similan only in the dry season, when this national park is open to tourists - from October 16 to May 15.

The easiest way to get to the paradise Similan Islands from Phuket is by buying an excursion. Price for a day trip on Similan is about $ 100 for an adult or child over 11 years old (children from 4 to 11 years old - $ 80).

To get to Similan from Phuket, first you need to go 53 km north to the port of Khao Lak. Then on a speedboat (speed boat) another hour to rush through the waves and the sea to the Similans. The boat will most likely shake a lot, so it’s worth taking pills for motion sickness 30 minutes before boarding the boat (sold at any pharmacy or given out at the briefing before boarding the boat).

You can get to Similan on your own(no tour). First you need to get to Khao Lak (by bus, taxi, rented car). The main port from which boats depart for the Similans is Thap Lamu Port. In the morning at 8:30 a boat belonging to the national park departs from Thap Lamu Port (price: 2700 baht both ways = ~ $ 80). This boat can take you to islands #4 or #8. As you can see, an independent trip is much more difficult and not cheaper than buying an excursion from Phuket or Krabi.

Why you should buy an excursion to travel to the Similan

I usually lean towards self-organized trips, but in this case, a group tour is the most convenient way to visit the Similans.

The cost of an excursion to the Similan Islands includes a transfer to the islands, and an interesting program for the most beautiful beaches and bays of Similan:

  • transfer from the hotel to the pier in Khao Lak and back to the hotel in Phuket or Krabi,
  • snorkeling equipment rental (to swim with a mask and admire the fish),
  • tour of three - four islands with stops to swim or climb to the observation deck,
  • lunch and refreshments (including unlimited water throughout the trip).

Where to live in the Similan Islands

P.S.: since 2018, overnight stays on the Similans have been banned.

But there is an alternative - you can spend the night on a ship. An option for those who want to go to the Similans for a few days and understand scuba diving is an excursion on a large ship with full cabins like in a hotel.

What to bring to the islands

On a trip to the Similan Islands, you must take with you:

  • swimsuit and towel
  • sun cream (waterproof),
  • headwear and sunglasses
  • pills for motion sickness (should be taken 15-20 minutes before boarding the boat),
  • mosquito spray or cream (these bloodsuckers can bite even at noon if you decide to dine in a shady place).

Under water on the Similans there are many fish and corals, and turtles can often be found. Be sure to take mask, fins and snorkel to admire the underwater beauty. If you don't have your kit, no problem. Snorkel mask and fins can be rented on the shore in Khao Lak before boarding the boat.

If you are a bad swimmer, wear life vest and swim to your heart's content. Vests are available on all excursion boats.

If you are prone to sunburn, wear a long sleeve shirt and swim in it. On the second day on the Similans, I was very sorry that I did not have anything like this with me. Salvation came from heaven - the sky was overcast and it saved me from serious sunburn.

When disembarking from a boat, be sure to take your shoes with you, since the path to the most beautiful viewing platforms is often strewn with prickly branches, sticks and leaves. Although it is forbidden to walk in shoes on the islands, this rule is not monitored on the paths inside the island.

Is it worth it to go on an excursion to the Similan with children

Definitely not worth traveling with small children. The road to the Similans is exhausting even for adults. With children, it is better to go to the nearest islands from Phuket. For example, Maiton Island is not much inferior to the Similans - turquoise water, white sand and it takes about 40 minutes to get there by speedboat.

The Similan Islands, or as they are also called - the Similan Islands - are a real gem among the many picturesque sights of Thailand. They are located 50 km from the western part of Phuket - and consist of 9 small islands, luxurious beaches (considered one of the best in the country) which are washed by the crystal clear blue waters of the tropical ocean.

“Similan” is translated as nine or a group of nine small islands.

Recently, the Similan Islands attracted the attention of the Royal Family, who subsequently took steps to preserve the pristine beauty of nature - the national wealth of Thailand. The princess even built herself a house on Koh Miang (No. 4), where she comes almost every year.

Similan is known for some of the best beaches in the world, excellent snorkeling and great diving spots. Many who have been there compare the landscape with the Dominican Republic, and the purity and transparency of the water and sand with.

These nine islands of Thailand are marked by UNESCO as one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

The archipelago has one unusual feature - a significant variety of landscapes from islet to islet. Rocky slopes in the west, massive boulders and winds have made this area barren. The east coast is covered with the most popular chic beaches and coral reef.

On land, you can see such rare beautiful birds as the sea eagle, kingfisher and the very rare maned pigeon. At sea, lovers of underwater adventures will meet sea turtles, rays, moray eels, and possibly even whale sharks. And all this surrounded by an incredible number of tropical fish.

The Similan Islands are among the top 10 diving and snorkeling destinations in the world. The first diver in these places was the founder of the scuba diving system, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who surveyed and explored the underwater world of the pearl of the Andaman Sea and was struck by its richness and diversity.

It seems that the huge ocean inhabitants, who, by the way, are quite peaceful and friendly, are specially waiting here for divers and those who decide to just snorkel. Ocean currents lure sea devils, whale, leopard and reef sharks, some species of stingrays, Napoleon fish and many other amazing sea creatures here, and these places will surpass the most famous tropical resorts in terms of the number of teeming "pot-bellied little things".

And although the nature of these places suffered from El Niño in 2010, many reefs are already recovering (even at shallow depths) and the coral looks great.

The best weather here starts in mid-February and ends in May. The rainy season starts from mid-May and lasts until October, accompanied by a strong northwest wind.

The average temperature in the year is + 27 degrees, with a fairly high humidity - about 83%. During the year, 3,560 mm of precipitation falls.

The high season in these places is from October to May, but diving is possible all year round. The cleanest and clearest water is in the summer months. Visibility averages 20-25 meters and sometimes even reaches 40 meters!

Sounds good, right? But everything cannot be perfect - everything has its flaws. Here, these shortcomings are expressed in the crowds of tourists that fill them all year round. No, it's not that there is nowhere to set foot (the trip is still not the cheapest), but there are enough people. And despite all this, these places are still worth a visit.

The relief here is rather peculiar. If you draw an imaginary line in the middle of each small piece of land from north to south, then on the eastern half there will be sandy placers, gradually going deep into densely populated coral reefs, and on the western side - huge sheer boulders that meet powerful undercurrents and monsoon winds on land .

The dark rocks, due to their bizarre outlines, get quite funny names, for example, Donald Duck Bay.

Due to this peculiar terrain, diving and snorkeling from the east and west sides will be very different.

And because of their small size, those who wish can explore the unique underwater world from both the eastern and western sides in one day.

All the western coasts of the archipelago are surrounded by hard coral reefs in the form of a sheer wall 30-40 meters deep. But there are also soft corals that rise in beautiful waves from the seabed. There are no strong currents here.

On the east side, Similans are often surrounded by whirlpools around granite rocks, and diving is almost extreme. But very bright soft corals grow here, and the outlines of the rocks themselves, and small fish, and these corals make an indelible impression on the most sophisticated divers.

Those wishing to stay here are offered three options for housing. First of all, it is a bungalow or a tent. Secondly - a boat for diving tours. And thirdly - a tourist yacht with a cruise.

More details about the first option. Of all the nine islands, you can only stay in a room or bungalow on Ko Miang (# 4) and Ko Similan (# 8) - the largest and most developed. In addition to housing, they have small inexpensive restaurants with simple and not always tasty food. Bungalows are a very good option - almost all have electricity all day, a fan, as well as a mosquito net, a fresh water shower and a toilet. This option will cost 1000 baht per night (double room). If instead of a fan you need air conditioning under the initial conditions, the price rises to 2000 baht per night (also for two).

A tent is also an option, albeit a simple one - there is a pillow, a bedspread and a mattress on the floor. Well, without a mosquito net anywhere. Shower and toilet are shared. The tents are located 1-1.5 meters apart, making up a small campground on the embankment. There are tents for 2 and 4 people, they are closed with a zipper, and for things there is a left-luggage office at the reception. The cost of a night here is 570 baht (if you are going to come for the holidays, it is better to reserve a place for yourself in advance). And, of course, you shouldn't come here with your own tent - it's forbidden.

Catering for those who came on the tour is organized on the island number 4 - Koh Miang. There is also a restaurant on Koh Similan (No. 8). Menu - from alcohol - only beer.

In general, housing here is very modest. This is not a homeless person, of course, but if you are used to comfort, you should not stay overnight. And so living conditions are quite normal. And for these small inconveniences, you will be adequately rewarded with local nature and the richest underwater world.

The western part of almost all the Similan Islands is occupied by the most beautiful white sand beaches and access to the crystal clear sea. Paths branch out from the coast, leading to places with stunning views, such as the popular Mount Donald Duck on Koh Similan (#8).

Beaches are available for tourists at No. 4 - Koh Miang and No. 8 - Koh Similan. The most famous beach of the archipelago is located on Ko Similan (#8). First of all, this is Donald Duck Bay, the very one where Sail Rock is located, the most recognizable and advertised local attraction on many postcards. In addition to it, at number 8 there is another one for tourists, Beacon Beach. At No. 4 (Ko Miang), two beaches are also open to the public, Hat Yai (Honeymoon Bay) and Hat Lek (Princess Bay).

There is a very large and beautiful area with wonderful sand at No. 1 (Koh Huyong), however, unfortunately, it is generally closed to the public for the purpose of nature conservation - a colony of giant tortoises has settled there. On the rest, coastal recreation areas are not landscaped and often represent just a picturesque heap of huge boulders. If you have a great desire and you have rented a boat from Phuket, then you may well try to land on one of these wild places (with the exception of No. 1).

Snorkeling can be practiced both from the shore and from a tourist boat. You can rent it right on the spot or in travel agencies in Thailand. There are 25 dive sites in the region. Among the most famous places where the rich underwater world is clearly visible even from the surface are East of Eden, Deep Six and Anita's Reef. Although, of course, only divers can appreciate all the beauty here.

The most common underwater inhabitants are butterfly and flagpole fish, turtles. You can meet large barracudas, tuna, trevally. Giant manta rays also come here with their faithful companions - cobias (Cobia), very similar to sharks.

The standard one-day excursion to the archipelago includes snorkeling in four places: No. 8-Similan (Koh Similan), No. 9-Bangu (Koh Bangu), No. 4-Miang (Koh Miang), No. 5-Ha (Koh Haa) - snorkeling, a delightful rest on the white sand, then climbing the Sail mountain and to the observation deck on Koh Miang.

Be sure to wear sandals to walk on the stones, as the stones heated in the sun can burn. The view from Mount Sail (she is in the first photo) is breathtaking, however, in order to climb it, you will need to climb stairs and in some places even pull yourself up on the ropes. But on the other hand, from a height of 244 meters you can enjoy a gorgeous view of the nearby surroundings - the blue sea and the nearby land.

Since the archipelago is quite remote from other habitats, there may be delays in first aid. A boat with a doctor will be sent from the mainland right away, but it will take time before it reaches the destination.

Mobile phones work on islands 4 and 8, but the Internet can be found everywhere thanks to AirCard. There are no ATMs here either, so take enough cash.

As for housing - book in advance. Especially the bungalows - they are almost always full. So from November to May (visiting season), make sure you have somewhere to stay before you arrive.

But before you live somewhere, you need to get there. Everyone gets there mainly from Phuket (it's about 100 kilometers to the south). In Phuket, you drive along the Taplamu pier (it's about an hour and a half), and then about the same time - to Hyong Island (No. 1 on the map), and then to No. 4 or No. 8.

Divers have another, quite interesting, option for organizing a multi-day trip to the Similans. It is possible to buy a multi-day liveaboard dive safari, commonly referred to as a "liveaboard". The price of such a tour is 5000 baht per person for each day of the trip.

If your budget allows, it's not a bad idea to rent a boat or yacht (with a captain). This type of service is widespread in Thailand, especially in Phuket. And not necessarily for an excursion here, but also to other wonderful paradise places in Thailand. The cost of a day of rent starts from 20,000 baht and depends on the size and quality of the vessel, as well as your ability to bargain. Do not be alarmed, the above amount looks mind-blowing only at first glance. After all, yachts and boats are not single-seater, and if the cost of rent is spread over the entire company, the cost of organizing such a trip will no longer look so impressive.

Yes, and be sure to note that excursions to these heavenly places are only available from November to April. In the other six months, the archipelago is closed to the public in order to restore the surface and underwater world, trampled and frightened by numerous tourists.
